Chirping the LCLS Electron Beam

چکیده

We explore scenarios for generating a linear time-correlated energy spread in the LCLS electron bunch, prior to the undulator, that is needed for optical (x-ray) pulse compression. The correlated energy spread (‘chirp’) is formed by generating an energy gradient along the length of the electron bunch using RF phasing and/or longitudinal wakefields of the accelerating structures. The sign of the correlation is an important limitation. Excluding a complete re-design of the compression systems, the best possibility is to use ‘over-compression’ to effect the required energy chirp. This is easily done with only a slight strength increase (~10 %) in the chicane bends of the second compressor. In this case, the bend-plane emittance dilution associated with the increased coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) in the bunch compressor may, however, significantly compromise the electron beam density. The CSR calculations for the momentary extremely short (~1 m) electron bunch during over-compression are quite subtle and an adequate confidence level may not be achievable. A practical limit in this short-pulse scenario may be to use spontaneous rather than FEL radiation. Ignoring the potential emittance growth, a FWHM electron energy spread of 2 % is possible.

Linac Coherent Light Source Undulator Rf Bpm System *

The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) will be the world's first x-ray free-electron laser (FEL) when it becomes operational in 2009. The LCLS is currently in the construction phase. The beam position monitor (BPM) system planned for the LCLS undulator will incorporate a high-resolution X-band cavity BPM system described in this paper. The BPM system will provide high-resolution measurements of...

Girder Support Scheme for the LCLS Undulator System

Differential settlement of the foundation of the LCLS Undulator Hall will cause quadrupoles to move and the electron beam trajectory to distort. The resulting phase errors will decrease the FEL power and require time consuming beam-based alignment sessions to correct. By supporting quadrupoles on girders, with three quadrupoles to a girder, the foundationmotion induced phase error between the b...

Start-End Simulations for the LCLS X-Ray Free-Electron Laser

The LCLS Free-Electron Lasers operates in the wavelength range of 1.5 15 Angstrom, using an electron beam with an energy between 4.5 and 14.5 GeV. The generation of the electron beam, the preservation of its brightness during acceleration and compression, and the amplification of the spontaneous radiation within the FEL can only be described by a consistent set of simulation codes. We present t...

Lcls Undulator Commissioning, Alignment, and Performance *

The LCLS x-ray FEL has recently achieved its 1.5Angstrom lasing and saturation goals upon first trial. This was achieved as a result of a thorough pre-beam checkout, both traditional and beam-based component alignment techniques, and high electron beam brightness. The x-ray FEL process demands very tight tolerances on the straightness of the electron beam trajectory (<5 μm) through the LCLS und...

Temporal profile of the LCLS photocathode ultraviolet drive laser tolerated by the microbunching instability ∗

The high quality LCLS electron beam generated in the photoinjector is subject to many instabilities in the downstream acceleration and compression. The instability can be initiated by any density modulation of the electron beam generated at the photocathode. In this paper, we prescribe the tolerance on the initial electron beam density modulation possibly introduced by the ultraviolet (uv) lase...
